Recenzii

In essence, the work provides a picture of how American Methodism, in terms of its worship, moved from the byways to the main streets.
... the study opens a window into the development of one particular Christian worship tradition whose engagement with American culture has parallels with other traditions shaped on American soil.
While of value to cultural historians because of American Methodism's median position as a liturgical tradition, this account is of primary benefit to those interested in the history of American worship traditions, both those more textually-bound and those more free and utilitarian in their worship.
The genius of this contribution is its comprehensiveness in examining for the first time the worship life of an American ecclesiological tradition.
I highly recommend this book. Simply put, Karen Westerfield Tucker's American Methodist Worship is not only an important read now, but it will be the launching point for future historical work in the field.
The book's ambitious scope, along with the author's meticulous, even-handed method, are its main contributions. There simply is not anything comparable to this book.
It will be a foundational book for anyone who wishes to understand how American Methodists have worshipped. The author is eminently qualified to write the book, being one of the most prolific historical investigators currently looking at Methodist worship on both sides of the Atlantic.
... a significant contribution to American and Methodist worship studies.
American Methodist Worship is the most comprehensive history of worship among John Wesley's various American spiritual descendents that has ever been written.
This is an important book which should be studied by all who would seek to lead the people called Methodists in the public worship of God. Here is a volume which, although expensive, should at least find a place in the libraries of our theological colleges and resource centres.
Karen Westerfield Tucker is one of the rising stars in the American Methodist liturgical firmament.
