Recenzii
’The life and career of William Howley (1766-1848), hitherto one of the few Archbishops of Canterbury lacking serious biographical treatment, has been brought to revealing life in this readable as well as learned and primary source-based study by James Garrard. Garrard is masterly in his exploration and detailing of Howley’s diocesan and parliamentary work in the House of Lords on behalf of church, educational, and political reform. Garrard also focuses on Howley’s important chairmanship of the Ecclesiastical Commission, as well as his theological views in historical context and above all in relation to the Oxford Movement. The result is a fruitful and illuminating re-appraisal of the intellectual, spiritual and ecclesiastical context in which Howley operated and moved.’ Peter Nockles, Manchester Wesley Research Centre, UK

Descriere
Exploring the central events and debates within the Church of England in the first half of the nineteenth century, this book examines Howley’s career and influence. A section of primary sources places Howley’s achievements in proper context and illustrates his prevailing concerns in education, the establishment and political reform. Dealing thematically with many of the issues faced by Howley, and exploring his own High Church theological views in historical context, Garrard offers a fruitful re-appraisal of the intellectual, spiritual and ’party’ context in which Howley moved.
