Annie Besant (1 October 1847 - 20 September 1933) was a prominent British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer and orator and supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule.In 1867, Annie at age 20, married Frank Besant, a clergyman, and they had two children, but Annie's increasingly anti-religious views led to a legal separation in 1873. She then became a prominent speaker for the National Secular Society (NSS) and writer and a close friend of Charles Bradlaugh. Notă biografică

Annie Besant was a prominent British social activist, feminist, and writer who became interested in spiritual and philosophical matters during her lifetime. One of her most notable works was "An Introduction to Yoga," which was written before 1908. In this book, Besant provided a comprehensive overview of the practice and philosophy of yoga, drawing on her own experiences and research. She discussed the various types of yoga, their principles, techniques, and benefits, and emphasized the importance of yoga as a tool for personal and spiritual growth. Besant's work was groundbreaking in its accessibility and comprehensiveness, as it was one of the first English-language books on the subject. Her writing helped to popularize yoga in the West and contributed to its growing interest and understanding. Moreover, Besant's "An Introduction to Yoga" remains a significant work in the field, and her contribution to the spread of yoga and Eastern philosophy in the West continues to be appreciated by many.
