Busted: (Why I Became a Lawyer)

en Limba Engleză Paperback – 2 mar 2014
This is the fourth in a series of five sea stories based on the author's experience in the merchant marine. The S.S. Summit was one of the prototype containerships running up and down the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. During winter, that's probably the most miserable route for U.S. merchant ships. John signs on as Wiper, the lowest form of life in the engine room. After trying to save his work partner from a marijuana bust, John ends up sitting beside him in jail in Cordova, Alaska. Unable to make bail, John concludes that he'd need to be a lawyer himself to get out of jail. That realization starts a years-long process for John to go to law school and actually become a lawyer helping other seamen. John Merriam was an unlicensed merchant seaman from 1970 to 1982 while working his way through college and law school. Tuition for law school was paid with a scholarship from the Seafarers Int'l Union. John passed the bar in 1982 and is now a sole practitioner at Fishermen's Terminal in Seattle. He restricts his practice to maritime claims for wages and injury. The author lives with his wife, Kaye Walker, in Shoreline, Washington.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

You can't trust the Bible; it's been translated too many times. Jesus never claimed to be the Messiah or God. Science has proven that miracles don't happen (so the Bible is a fairytale). All religions basically teach the same thing (so all paths lead to God). Have you heard these? People say a lot of things about the Bible, God, Jesus, and Christianity that are simply not true. Like the guys on the popular cable show Mythbusters, it's time we put these commonly held myths to the test. Following a brief summary of a recurring myth or misconception about the Christian faith, Fred explains why the myth is false and provides biblical and historical evidence in his response. He masterfully weaves together serious discussion with a touch of humor in his responses, all the while keeping the focus on the Scriptures. He avoids making fun of the people who hold views which differ from his own, but the views themselves are fair game. So grab a cup of coffee and find a cozy corner. Let's do a little myth busting of our own.

People say a lot of things about the Bible, God, Jesus, and Christianity that are simply not true. So in the style of the popular cable show Mythbusters, a New Testament scholar uses biblical and historical evidence---and humor---to do a little myth busting of his own.
