Care of the World: Fear, Responsibility and Justice in the Global Age: Studies in Global Justice, cartea 11

Autor Elena Pulcini Traducere de Karen Whittle
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 26 aug 2013
This book proposes a philosophy of care in a global age. It discusses the distinguishing and opposing pathologies produced by globalization: unlimited individualism or self-obsession, manifested as (Promethean) omnipotence and (narcissistic) indifference, and endogamous communitarianism or an ‘us’-obsession that results in conflict and violence. The polarization between a lack and an excess of pathos is reflected in the distorted forms taken on by fear. The book advocates a metamorphosis of fear, which may restore in the subject an awareness of vulnerability and become the precondition for moral action. Such awareness and the recognition of the condition of contamination caused by the other’s unavoidable presence teach us to fear for rather than be afraid of. Fear for the world means care of the world, and care, understood as concern and solicitude, is a new notion of responsibility, in which the stress is shifted to a relational subject capable of responding to and taking care of the other. From a global perspective, the proposed vision of care also compels us to explore a new paradigm of justice.

Recenzii

“This welcome and refreshing shift opens up a rich philosophical framework … . Care of the World: Fear, Responsibility and Justice in the Global Age is a masterful work. Pulcini carefully builds her argument, mining the rich resources of care ethics and social and political philosophy. … Readers will find in Pulcini’s work not only a philosophical guide for reconceiving our sociality but also a blueprint for transforming our very relationship to the globalized world.” (Antonio Calcagno, Symposium, c-scp.org, August 06, 2019)
From the reviews:
“Pulcini’s volume offers a needed integration of historical, philosophical, psychological, and moral knowledge; in doing so, it constitutes a substantive platform for discussing, exploring, and advancing thought and action in our global age. … required reading for college and university freshmen as a framework or foundation for their subsequent studies. I recommend the volume. It is an essential resource for our times.” (Anthony J. Marsella, PsycCRITIQUES, Vol. 58 (26), June, 2013)
