Col CP Muthanna joined the Indian Army in December 1972 and attended the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington [South India] in 1986. He served in the army for twenty-four years and took voluntary retirement from service in 1996.He founded the Environment and Health Foundation (EHF), India in 1998. The EHF is a small NGO, working mainly on water related issues including Rainwater Harvesting and Protection of River Catchment areas. On behalf of the EHF, he has prepared a proposal for Stabilization of Climate Change in the Himalayas and the Mekong Basin. This has been termed as the HIMEK proposal and involves the joint cooperation of 11 countries in the Himalayas and the Mekong Region. In 2018, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Asian Institute of Technology at Thailand have signed an MOU on the basis of the HIMEK proposal prepared by Col Muthanna. A HIMEK program for India is currently under way at the India office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Col Muthanna is currently the Vice Chair of the Kodagu Model Forest Trust (KMFT).In 2006, Col Muthanna was awarded the Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam award for work in the field of Environment by the Government of Karnataka. He has also been honoured for his community service by the Rotary Club of Gonikoppal, and for his environmental protection work by the Coorg Wildlife Society and Cauvery College, Gonikoppal.He was the President of the Coorg Wildlife Society from 2003 to 2009, and from 2012 till 2018. The Coorg Wildlife Society is an NGO that is working on conservation and protection of the Forest Habitat and the Kodagu landscape. In 2005 The Coorg Wildlife Society was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Parisara Prashusti by the Karnataka state Government.
