From letters that request Midge's assistance with town happenings like the Annual Afton Early Spring Winter Carnival and with social gatherings like the Cod Squad that eagerly searches for the best fish fry around town, it is soon evident that Midge is the go-to-gal, town confidante, avid collector of gossip, and connoisseur of all things potluck-including deviled eggs, seven-layer dip with a shocking fifth layer, and a tantalizing sausage concoction. An authentically old-fashioned atmosphere abounds as Midge discovers the hidden joys behind a wacky white sale at Garrison's Grocer-rama and the personal rewards behind being member of the American Society of Ladies' Unmentionables and Toys (also known as ASLUT).
