Designing Renewable Energy Systems within Planetary Boundaries: A Textbook for Energy Engineers: Green Energy and Technology

Editat de Mika Järvinen, Hanna Paulomäki
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 dec 2024
This is an open access book. This textbook is on interdisciplinary sustainability for energy engineering students. Future generations of engineers need to be game changers. The book is aimed to help future engineers redesigning their world, avoid harmful lockdowns, and avoid creating new problems while redesigning energy systems in economically profitable and ecologically sustainable ways. It explains the principles of ‘planetary boundaries’ addressing the most relevant ones throughout the book. The book’s focus is on the main ways to produce renewable power and heating. Technical and economical basic design principles are discussed. The book also includes the discussions on main energy storage solutions. Each section has also an overview of the impacts of renewable energy production on ecosystems. The book while written for university-level engineering students is a useful guide for engineers working on renewable energy projects.

Notă biografică

Mika Järvinen, Doctor of Science (Tech.), is working as a tenured associate professor at Aalto University in the School of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering. He received the doctoral degree from the Helsinki University of Technology 2002. After working 10 years as a post-doc researcher, he was accepted into the professor’s Tenure-Track system at Aalto 2012. He has published 79 peer-reviewed journal articles (H-Index 15, Scopus) and more than 40 conference papers. He has one patent on mineral carbonation of CO2 (granted 2021). He has also supervised 76 Master’s theses, supervised 9 doctoral dissertations, and one licentiate thesis at Aalto. He has acted 12 times as an Opponent in doctoral defense and as a Pre-examiner. His research work at Energy Conversion research group at Aalto is currently related to Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) by different methods, mainly focusing on mineral carbonation-based methods.

Hanna Paulomäki is an experienced project and team leader with a demonstrated history of successfully following through and completing various projects and campaigns. She has a long working history in inter-governmental and international non-governmental organizations. She has an M.Sc. in ecology, and she is skilled in biodiversity, nature conservation, environmental policy, marine protection, sustainable fisheries, fundraising, and project and team management. She has strong communication and social skills. She has been responsible on a variety of reports and has contributed to as an author into three books. Moreover, in her previous work, she has been part of a team responsible in editing three books (not as an editor).
