Don't Let the Riff-Raff in

en Limba Engleză Paperback
It is 1966 and seventeen-year-old Anne Traynor has left Nazareth House, the orphanage where she spent thirteen-years of her life. Now free from the restrictions imposed on her by the nuns. She is able to make her own way in the world. As a bridesmaid at her sister Elizabeth's wedding she meets Katie who has split up from her long-term boyfriend. They are both at crossroads in their lives and looking for adventure. With the impetuosity of youth they decide to leave the north- east and head for the bright lights of Manchester. They board a train from Middlesbrough railway station with only a packet of crisps, a carton of milk and very little money. On arrival in Manchester they look for cheap accommodation to rent. The only suitable digs they can find is a bedsit in Cheetham Hill. It is owned by Jewish landlady Mrs Lowe who says she runs a 'respectable house' and 'no riffraff's allowed'. But all is not what it seems. Why do its tenants call it the Den of Iniquity? They include Liam, a young gay lad who has an off/on relationship with his violent bisexual lover Robbie, the charismatic Faye and her partner Jo, and Tania, who rents a bedsit overlooking the back garden so she can look out for her clients when they call. Then there's Scots Billy and Dougie, a couple of petty thieves, whose doors are frequently visited by the police. On the top floor lives an old man, a holocaust survivor. The nights are frequently broken by his loud screams as in his nightmares he relives the horrors of the concentration camps. Anne and Katie only plan on staying until they find work and can afford a decent bedsit. But their lives soon become intertwined with those of the other tenants. Naive and innocent Anne is plummeted into a colourful world, which is completely at odds with her strict Catholic upbringing and will change her forever. This is the sequel to Memoirs of a Nazareth House Girl
