Elusive Roles of Domestic Animals as Reservoirs of HAT in NW Uganda

African Trypanosomiasis is a disease that affects both human and animals caused by trypanosomes transmitted by tsetse flies. The problem of HAT and animal reservoirs of human infective trypanosomes is introduced followed by a review of various aspects of African Trypanosomiasis. The trypanosome infection rates including mixed infections in selected domestic animals are presented. The detection of human infective (T. b. gambiense and T. b. rhodesiense) trypanosomes in domestic animal blood samples using specific polymerase chain reaction is described. Tsetse host feeding preferences based on blood meal analysis are stated.

Notă biografică

Balyeidhusa was born 1970 to Ms. B.K. Bafaane and Mr. Y.A. Munyira (1931-97) in Iganga, Uganda. Studied at Iganga Township Pri Sch (1976-80); Bulyansime Pri Sch (1982); Iganga High Sch (1986) for UCE; Jinja S.S.S (1989) for UACE. Holds a BSc (Biochem & Chem) (1993); MSc (Biochem) (1999) and a PhD (Biochem)(2012). Lecturer at Makerere University.
