Recenzii
One of the major joys ... of Pike's writing is the range of reference he deploys ... [G]ems such as George Eliot's position on teaching or anecdotes about Coleridge and Wordsworth at waterfalls will all delight English teachers ... [Ethical English] is a thought-provoking book ... [and] certainly something that will get you fired up, make you think, and possibly change your teaching.
Ethical English is intellectually substantive, enormously helpful to the English teacher and, quite frankly, inspired. The books available on the teaching of English do little to address the telos of the discipline for the student or the teacher. Moreover, they tend to be constrained by ideology or technique. The broad and deep look Pike takes at the teaching of English as a liberal art is both refreshing and provocative. It deserves wide readership both within and outside the university.
Literature has huge potential to extend children's horizons and develop their moral imagination, and so it is encouraging to find a book that positions spiritual and moral education at the heart of English teaching.
