Faith, hope, and love remain

Compozitor Malcolm Archer
en Limba Engleză Sheet music – 19 apr 2012
for SATB and organThis uplifting anthem combines two well-known texts that are commonly read at weddings: 1 Corinthians 13:13 ('And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.') and Song of Solomon 8:6-7 ('For love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it.'). The music perfectly mirrors the message of the texts, with flowing solo organ passages and melodic vocal lines building to full homophonic textures at the climax. Portraying a theme that is both personal and eternal, Faith, hope, and love remain is suitable for use not only as part of a wedding ceremony but also for general services and concerts.

Recenzii

Archer cleverly combines two of the standard wedding texts in a commission for a very special wedding, that of the RSCM's former Regional Music Adviser, Andrew Robinson, to Laura in 2011 . . . to create an anthem about God's love, suitable for general use as well as at weddings. The organ part and vocal lines (linked by musical motifs) have a relaxed and easy flow, building to a thrilling climax in what is overall a reflective piece.
The sunny key of F major is never seriously challenged, although Archer ably introduces some effective chromatic harmonies that enrich the tonal landscape. Part writing is modest and would work well for children's voices. The accompaniment, marked for either organ or piano in the score, is built on a memorable rhythmic motive that appears in nearly every measure without ever being tiresome. This fine piece is an excellent addition to treble choir literature, and it is also available in a versino for SATB and organ.
