Nearing the Labor Day weekend of 2002, Matt Carpenter's away on a trip with friends when he's almost killed in a parachute crash. Hitting the ground at over 40 miles an hour, his body was destroyed by the impact. The blunt trauma caused a brain injury, multiple bodily fractures and compound broken bones. If not for immediate treatment, Matt would have bled to death right there. During heart surgery, the reality of death was still very close.
