John Atkinson is senior principal at Coffey Geotechnics, and emeritus professor of soil mechanics at City University, London. He is the author of several textbooks, including The Mechanics of Soils and Foundations (2nd ed) also published by Taylor & Francis.

It sets out the basic principles and theories of soil mechanics and the common analyses for slopes, foundations, and walls and includes sections on ground modeling and selection of design parameters. It does not go into detailed explanations and justifications and it does not derive formulae and analyses but it gives extensive references to the longer standard texts which readers can consult for detailed explanations.
