Examines 19th-century American women's intellectual and aesthetic experience of nature; and investigates the linguistic, perceptual, and scientific systems that were available to women to describe those experiences. This work focuses on 4 writers and their influential works: Almira Phelps, Margaret Fuller, Susan Fenimore Cooper and Mary Treat.
