Notă biografică
A fifth-generation Oregonian, McOmie is a journalist, author, and teacher who realized he hadn't seen enough of his native state and he has spent much of his thirty-year career as a news reporter exploring Oregon. He ended up enjoying his getaways so much that he decided to share these "teachable moments with touchable history" in a new Grant's Getaways series of guidebooks.

Recenzii
“No one knows how to get more out of our amazing state than Grant McOmie. He’s been showing us how to enjoy the best stuff along the back roads and beyond for a long time. I suspect he might actually be trying to get away from the question everyone asks him—‘How do I get your job?’—but I’m thankful Grant’s made it so easy for all of us to . . . get away.”
—Paul Linnman, KEX 1190 radio personality, and author of The Exploding Whale and Oregon Golf
“I've been a fan of Grant McOmie since his cub reporter days in Seattle. He is the voice of the great Pacific Northwest outdoors. Capturing not only the story of the destination, but sharing the legends, yarns, and accounts of the personalities that make Oregon this unique place we call home. Great read, makes me want to get outdoors even more!”
—John Williams, creator/host of Wheelchair Destinations
“Grant has long been a favorite of mine and now he’s sharing the how, what, where, and when of his insightful outdoor adventures. Whether tree climbing, cooking up a crawfish boil, digging clams and fossils, kayaking, snowshoeing, or soaring skyward, Grant offers 101 concise vignettes that intrigue and encourage us to lace up our boots and get out there. As Grant so aptly puts, ‘Why live here if you don’t go searching for those singular moments which set Oregon apart.’ Amen.”

Comentariile autorului
“Together, we’ll journey to a little-known corner of Oregon where you can stroll through a lush rain forest marked by a rare and towering stand of ancient giant redwood trees. We’ll ride the rails back into history to one of the mother loads of Oregon’s gold mining past. We’ll saddle up and join a horseback trip into the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Oregon’s high country….So lace up your hiking boots and buckle up your seat belts, too. We’re traveling toward adventures that make the Northwest corner of the United States so special.”
Extras
Longtime chef and local restaurateur and all around Oregon adventurer, Leather Storrs, said it’s really pretty simple: if you want to harvest wild mushrooms, learn their habitats. In the Tillamook State Forest ߝ where the sun and the shadows dance through the towering Doug fir trees, Storrs’ well-trained eyes were fixed down close to the ground as he searched for a culinary reward.
“Ohhh, there we are ߝ chanty number one ߝ it’s always good to get off the dime early,” exclaimed Storrs with a hearty laugh.
Chanterelles have a golden-orange hue and their chalice shape make them hard to spot ߝ but their allure is a woodsy flavor that’s hard to resist. Since 1999, the gorgeous fungi have been Oregon’s official State Mushroom.
“As soon as you see the first one,” noted Storrs. “There is this chanterella-vision that allows you to see that unique sort of peachy-orange color, but with the weather change and the alder leaves turning yellow on the ground it’s getting trickier.”
Chanterelles are not the only mushrooms in the forest. Storrs, an experienced mushroom hunter said that there are dozens of other mushrooms that grow here and most are none too friendly to people and many are downright dangerous.
“When you’re doing it without knowledge and confirmation, there’s no reason to take any chances. I learned in culinary school an old saying: ‘There are old mycologists and there are bold mycologists, but there are no old, bold mycologists.’
Leather Storrs may not be an old, bold mycologist, but he is one of Portland’s finest chefs.
