Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859), were born near Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse. Both law students at Marburg University, They are best remembered for their collection of German folk tales gleaned from oral sources and first published as 'Nursery and Household Tales' in 1814. Intended to preserve German folklore, the stories were translated into English by Edgar Taylor and soon became a staple of children's literature. Since entering the public domain the stories have provided a rich breeding ground for continuing creative efforts by Walt Disney and others. Included in this collection are over sixty stories from the the Grimms' Kinder und Hausmarchen, as translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes.
