Designed to fill a gap in the literature on professional ethics for psychologists, this book covers topics typically neglected in existing books, being more radical and controversial than much of the literature in this area. Rather than take ethical pronouncements associated with some organizations as dogma not to be questioned but simply understood and observed, the editors of this Handbook have encouraged a questioning, critical attitude. This book is therefore in part an attempt to push harder on the ethical impulse in psychologists, pushing beyond `comfort zones' to encourage positions of moral leadership.

The coverage oftopics makes the book appropriate to address the current movement forResponsible Conduct of Research, a movement that is likely to result inrequiring all university personnel to have proficiency in the ethics ofresearch, mentoring, and scholarship."

This carefully edited volume iscomprehensive in its scope, ranging from ethical considerations in research tothe ethics of working with gays and lesbians in psychotherapy to ethical issuesin the use of animals in research. The two dozen chapters are carefully andclearly written and provide useful guidelines for resolving important questionsand issues. But at least as significant, this book encourages the reader tothink deeply about the many complex issues that are inherent to the study ofbehavior and efforts to make changes in people’s lives. Sometimes unequivocalanswers are elusive, but knowing what questions to ask surely enhances ourscientific and applied efforts. A must read.
