Handbook of Slope Stabilisation

Editat de J. A. R. Ortigao, Alberto Sayao
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 mar 2004
This book is aimed at the practising engineer and engineering geologist working in tropical environments, where lands lides are mainly triggered by rain fall. This book is based on a similar work published in 1999 in Portuguese, which became the Rio de Janeiro Slope Manual. This book is an engineering guide for the design of slopes and stabilisation works in rocks and residual soils. It evolves from the cumulative experience gathered by several engineers and geologists who faced severe slope problems. The authors' experience throughout Central and South America (Costa Rica, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela) and the Far East, especially Hong Kong and Malaysia, was used as a foundation for writing this book. The work also benefits enormously from the time spent in Hong Kong in 1996 and 1997 by the first editor on sabbatical at the City University of Hong Kong, and the discussions he had with many colleagues from the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Hong Kong Government, especially Dr. A. Malone, Mr. w.K. Pun, Dr. A. Li, Mr. K. Ho, and Mr. y.c. Chan among others.

Recenzii

From the reviews:
"Ortigao … edited and contributed to this book aimed at practicing geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists working on landslides and slope stabilization in tropical environments. … this handbook is best described as a manual or guide on how to design … . The book includes a comprehensive index, references, calculations, data, and is well illustrated with diagrams, charts, figures, and photographs. … Summing Up: Recommended. Civil engineering collections; graduate students through professionals." (I.D. Gordon, CHOICE, Vol. 42 (3), November, 2004)
"There are 16 chapters, including the introduction, each tackling a different aspect of slope stabilisation works. … In summary, this book provides a helpful review of slope stabilisation techniques, and geotechnical engineers working with rocks and residual soils in tropical regions will find it useful." (R. J. Chandler, Geotechnique, Vol. 55 (6), 2005)
"The Handbook of Slope Stabilisation is a compendium of chapters written by a group of 8 notable Brazilian geotechnical specialists. … Above all, it is illustrated with colour, particularly towards the front of the book. … I found this to be fascinating, practical and useful book, which I recommend to other geotechnical specialists dealing with slope instability. … students of the geotechnical sciences studying in, or contemplating working in, the tropics will want this book as one of their course texts." (Eddie Bromhead, Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Issue 38, 2005)
"The purpose of the book is to present a concise documentation on design of slopes and selection of a slope stabilization method. … This book would be of interest as a reference in engineering schools, at university level, and to administrators facing slope stability problems in their areas of responsibility. It is a fine publication and much needed." (Philip E. LaMoreaux, Environmental Geology, Vol. 52, 2007)
