After tragedy struck his business during the Great Depression, McDowell's father moved them two thousand miles away to Backus, Minnesota. Twelve-year-old McDowell traded the sunshine for snow. In the dozen years that followed, he became a major provider for the family and developed a work ethic that would serve him in all future endeavors.
