His beginning in the Major Leagues caused quite a stir when his first two pitching assignments against Philadelphia and Brooklyn resulted in shutouts of 6-0, setting a modern-day pitching record for the National League. His life was miraculously changed in 1958 when he and Shirley accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior.
