James: Sacra Pagina (Quality Paper), cartea 14

Autor Patrick J. Hartin Editat de Daniel J. Harrington
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 mar 2009

In his commentary on the letter of James, Hartin offers a unique approach toward understanding a much-neglected writing. Refusing to read the letter of James through the lens ofPaul, Hartin approaches the letter in its own right. He takes seriously the address to the twelve tribes in the Dispersion" (1:1) as directed to Jews who had embraced the message of Jesus and were living outside their homeland, Israel. At the same time, Hartin shows how this letter remains true to Jesus' heritage. Using recent studies on rhetorical culture, Hartin illustrates how James takes Jesus ' sayings and performs them again in his own way to speak to the hearers/readers of his own world.

Hartin examines the text, passage by passage, while providing essential notes and an extensive explanation of the theological meaning of each passage. The value of this commentary lies in its breadth of scholarship and its empathic approach to this writing. The reader will discover new and refreshing insights into the world of early Christianity as well as a teaching that is of perennial significance.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

The Letter of James provides an important message that challenges us as Christians to put faith into action. He shows that it is an important writing that sheds light and understanding onto the world of early Christianity. This treatment culminates in an extensive explanation of the theological meaning of James within its own context as well as its application for today?s reader. A detailed bibliography follows each section enabling readers to pursue further interests.?Hartin has produced a commentary well worth having on one?s shelf.? Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society?H?s James is a resounding success. His commentary represents the ?state of the art? in research on the letter of James ? The Catholic Biblical Review ?An established authority on the Epistle of St. James, Professor Patrick J. Hartin offers a most comprehensive and yet lucid commentary on one of the most important writings in the New Testament canon, shrouded in its own mystery and conflicting interpretations. Hartin adapts an interdisciplinary approach to St. James. . . . By applying the insights of cultural studies and rhetorical argumentation, Hartin provides a persuasive case for a renewed attention to the Epistle of St. James as a paradigm for ?spiritual perfection? in the context of the holy liturgy revealing God as the ?giver of all good gifts.?? Jon Ma. Asgeirsson Professor of New Testament Studies and Early Christianity University of Iceland?Hartin not only brings the full resources of historical criticism to bear on James, but also treats the letter with careful attention to its rhetorical structure, situation, and argumentation, and with sensibilities to the cultural scripts of Jews living in the ancient Mediterranean. This combination of rhetorical and social-science approaches make for a reading that both situates James appropriately in its ancient, and therefore somewhat foreign, cultural setting, and shows how James spoke powerfully in the setting. Though filled with erudition and engaging a wide body of scholarly literature, Hartin's work is lucid, direct, and lively.? John S. Kloppenborg Professor of Religion University of Toronto? The superb Sacra Pagina series is nearly complete with the appearance of this commentary on the Letter of James. This latest addition maintains the fine quality and helpful format of the series, with a fresh, literal translation of the biblical text, detailed commentary, and broader theological reflection on the message of the text.? The Bible Today? The commentary is readable and well organized. . . . Hartin?s commentary is a worthy addition to the Sacra Pagina series.? Toronto Journal of Theology?. . . a substantial and worthy addition to the series and is sure to be useful to a wide range of readers. . . . Hartin succeeds in reading James on its own terms and does a fine job of opening up some of the richness of this small but powerful composition. The commentary deserves attention from scholars and should prove useful as well to students and pastors.? Interpretation
