Recenzii
Rocher's solid, scholarly approach makes this edition and translation a most valuable contribution.
Ludo Rocher, a leading scholar of indology and legal history, has published a new translation of Jimutavahana's Dayabhaga, long awaited by many scholars.
That Rocher manages to render discussions into lucid, idiomatic English prose is a testament to his erudition. He should, in short, be commended for the production of a work of profound learning that is universally accessible.
The clarity and crispness of the Sanskrit text is, moreover, a welcome sight for all those who are familiar with the usual condition of the literature on dharmasastra. One hopes that others will follow Rocher's example and grant other major works of Indian legal scholarship similiar dignity.
... the work of careful scholarship and is, for most purposes, as close to a critical edition of the text as is required.
... a welcome arrival for those interested in the history of thought in India.
There is a wealth of information in this volume that lawyers, legal historians and others may indeed find useful, because these principles live on and continue to compete for attention in the socio-legal arena.
Rocher's translation reads very well indeed ... An excellent bibliography and a list of quotations from ancient texts are useful assets ... lucid translations and innumerable learned explanations.
