King Henry VIII

Autor William Shakespeare
en Limba Engleză Paperback
William Shakespeare is widely considered the greatest writer in the history of the English language, so renowned and respected that the time period in which he lived is often known as the Age of Shakespeare. Indeed, his genius is questioned only by those who doubt the authenticity of his authorship of timeless classics like Romeo and Juliet. As Ben Jonson once put it, "He was not of an age, but for all time." No other writer, in English or in any other language, can rival the appeal that Shakespeare has enjoyed around the world, and nobody's had a bigger influence.

Today Henry VIII is one of England's most famous kings, mostly for the wrong reasons. Best known for marrying several wives and beheading some of them, Henry VIII was still recent history when Shakespeare wrote this play about him.

Recenzii

Halio gives a useful historical summary of the split from Rome
Textual apparatus is of a high standard . . . the commentary provides succinct notes on chronological and historical detail, pointed reference to sources used and works that supplement the playwrights' sources, and a comprehensive gloss to problematic words and phrases usefully keyed to a separate index. This is an excellent edition for undergraduate study: the introduction works to consolidate previous critical approaches without itself ever offering restrictive pronouncements on how to read the play, while the text and commentary are set out in a clear, uncrowded manner. Attention to the working needs of the student is evident throughout

Notă biografică

Carl D. Atkins has studied Shakespeare for decades. In addition to his variorum edition of The Sonnets (only the fourth variorum edition since The Sonnets were printed in 1609) he has published two articles on The Sonnets and one on Measure for Measure, all in the respected journal, Studies in Philology. Dr. Atkins has made a complete metrical analysis of all 154 poems, which serves as an excellent companion to Shakespeare's Sonnets Among His Private Friends. It is available gratis at: www.amonghisprivatefriends.com. Dr. Atkins is a physician. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lives with his wife in New York. Review of Shakespeare's Sonnets: With Three Hundred Years of Commentary: "...Atkins also offers an insightful running commentary on the metrical features of the individual poems, making this edition stand out even further from all other recent editions. Including a fine bibliography, a general index, and three appendixes, this lucid, well-researched edition is the product of many years of labor and love; it will be an indispensable work for those interested in Shakespeare's sonnets."
