Land and the City: Patterns and Processes of Urban Change

Autor Philip Kivell
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 26 noi 1992
First Published in 2004. Presents a broad analysis of land use patterns and processes in urban areas. Land has the greatest significance for the spatial patterning and functioning of modern urban settlements and societies - providing the basic morphological elements of the city, it is a source of social and economic power, is intimately bound up with environmental issues and lies at the heart of planning. This book examines the way in which land is allocated and used in both theoretical and practical senses. The author examines the empirical data to reveal the sources and nature of land, how land is used and how those uses are changing in the contemporary city. Particular attention is paid to the misuse of land through vacancy or dereliction. He also explores the importance of land ownership and the principles of land policy using case studies. Finally, he assesses the land use implications of major urban change - deindustrialization, counter-urbanization and new technology. For the first time the overall significance of land use and ownership are examined in an urban geographical and planning context.

Recenzii

`This text is a welcome overview based on the classic mixture of prsonal research, synthesis of the work of other researchers, the identification of the needs of students, and, not least, the ability of the author to write a lucid, readable, and occassionally challenging resume.' - Environment and Planning B

`This is a good textbook on urban geography. It is, moreover, very up-to-date and comprehensive. The literature reviewed is so broad that almost anything you might want to know about land use can be found in it. It is good value for money. So use it as a treasure chest of information that you can plunder.' - Tijdschrift voor Economische en Sociale Geografie

`... There are clearly many good and useful things about this book. It is of most value to undergraduates who need a point of reference for any study... There is an extensive and detailed bibliography which will allow them to follow up some of the ideas initiated in the text, and some of the factual material which has been gathered from diverse sources is of value.' - Land Use Policy

`... Land and the City is commendably free of jargon, logically structured and a model of clear expression. It provides succinct summaries of arguments concerning a host of topical issues... This book will join the well-thumbed volumes within arm's reach of the desk chair in my study.' - Town Planning

`.. rich in information drawn from a wide variety of sources ... provides a good introduction to the research field.' - Times Higher Education Supplement
