Recenzii
'This excellent book should be on the shelf of every practising and aspiring local studies librarian both to instruct and inspire...' Library and Information Update 'The book is easy to read. The format and the fluent nature of the text will engage those who are looking for specific information and those who wish to read from cover to cover. Each chapter provides a large number of examples and sources for further information. ...this book more than adequately fills the gap that has existed for a handbook of local studies collection management and should be a useful and valuable addition to the professional literature.' Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) for Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) website 'Book of the Month - September 2003 ...this is a well-written and comprehensive book on the management of what is an increasingly important collection in libraries. It is likely to be well received by specialist librarians and library managers...' Managing Information, September 2003
Descriere
Whether libraries have a designated Local Studies Librarian or not, they have to provide this service and manage their own local studies collection. This book will be a guide to key areas they need to know about, each chapter by a different expert: introduction and background; resource providers (who holds what types of record); policy, finance, staffing, accommodation; different media - sound, print, photographic - information they hold and how to access it; acquisition, cataloguing and classification; management and preservation; marketing the collection; dealing with enquiries. The guide is aimed at public, academic and specialist librarians, archivists, and will also be relevant to those working with local authority records, local history societies and private collections.
