Macbeth est un general ecossais, heros de guerre et devoue sujet du roi d'Ecosse, Duncan. En pleine lande, trois sorcieres apparaissent pour lui annoncer qu'il deviendra roi. Devore d'ambition mais hesitant et apeure, c'est pousse par sa machiavelique epouse Lady Macbeth qu'il assassine son bienfaiteur pour s'emparer du trone. Mais la culpabilite et la paranoia les font peu a peu sombrer dans la folie...
