The continuous quest for weight reduction, especially in ground and air transportation, has catalyzed the de velopment of light metals and alloys. In this search, particular attention is being paid to magnesium, used at present in a diversity of applications, each one exploring a specific range of unique properties. As a result, the magnesium consumption by many important market sectors is growing at an impressive rate exceeding 10% per year. In parallel with the alloy development the search continues for new techniques of converting magnesium into useful products in a safe and effective manner. Magnesium injection molding, commercialized in recent years, represents a modern technology that is clean and safe for workers as well as friendly for an environment. Extensive research, conducted at both the industrial and university levels, indicates that the technique exceeded its initial expectations. While combining key features of a number of processing techniques, magnesium injection molding is emerging as a universal technology, capable of implementing many conventional and novel processing routes. The routes are based on both the semisolid slurry and fully molten alloy with tightly controlled temperature. Despite well-advanced practice, the critical breakthrough is still hindered by slow progress in understanding key mechanisms, controlling the process at stages of slurry preparation and component forming.

Notă biografică

Dr. Czerwinski did 2 years of postdoctoral study at McGill University and 2 years at McMaster University.  He has a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from McGill University, and  a PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Mining and Metallurgy, Cracow, Poland. 
He was a University Professor of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering and a faculty member for 19 years.  Dr. Czerwinski has been a manager and principal scientist of numerous research projects sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada, universities and industry.  At present, he is a Chief Metallurgist involved in a development of the injection molding machinery and researching metallurgical aspects of semisolid injection molding of metallic alloys.
He is the author of a monograph in surface engineering; and the author and co-author of over 140 reserch papers in peer-review scientific journals and conference proceedings.
Dr.Czerwinski is affiliated with: Professional Engineergs of Ontario, ASM International and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

Injection molding of metallic alloys is a modern and environment-friendly technology with universal features, capable of implementing many conventional and novel processing methods based on semisolid and liquid routes. After its application to magnesium and recent commercialization, it is used to manufacture millions of light-weight, fully-recyclable components for various markets, including consumer electronics housings, automotive parts, sporting goods, household devices and office equipment.
Magnesium Injection Molding takes the mystery out of this technique and covers both the scientific background and the technological aspects as they are understood at present. Fundamentals of magnesium alloys, semisolid state metallurgy and injection molding hardware are accompanied by intricate details of processing, phase transformations and properties of final structures with broad references to die casting and plastics injection.
