Purcell and Blow are clear influences, especially the latter, yet there are nods to earlier traditions too, and the six-part texture with its emphasis on the higher parts and its rhythmic intricacy is reminiscent of Weelkes' scoring, though without the rugged wildness. It is remarkable that this is the first publication of Turner's rewarding work, which should now find many more adherents. Webber's introduction is academic in tone and content, but informative too.

Notă biografică

William Turner was one of the leading counter-tenors of the Restoration period, holding posts at the Chapel Royal, St Paul's Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey. He was also a composer whose output included a grand Te Deum and Jubilate in D and over forty anthems.
