Paris, 1945, Franz is on a two-day visit in Paris as a special guest speaker at a university. He notices a sad-looking woman who he recognises. She turns out to be Margaret, a woman he rescued from the Gestapo. What happened to her and daughter Joanna since then? With a fascinating yet traumatic tale to tell she is requested to share her story at the university, too.

Franz, from a coal-mining family on the English/Welsh border, reveals how life started out for him: his family life; school life; his first job as a carpenter; college; and how he met Carmen, his wife-to-be. After he is happily married and Carmen falls pregnant, life takes a turn. The worst thing possible happens and Franz turns to drink for comfort and can't seem to find the light at the end of the tunnel... until he decides to leave Spain for good and venture to Switzerland.
