Measuring Human Trafficking: Complexities And Pitfalls

Editat de Ernesto U. Savona, Sonia Stefanizzi
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 29 oct 2010
Ernesto U. Savona and Sonia Stefanizzi The need to tackle the phenomenon of trafficking in human beings and, as part of this, the sexual exploitation of foreign women and children, has been increasingly recognized in recent years by many institutional, international and national agencies - as the copious documentation on the subject demonstrates. Yet, beyond all the interventions and provisions that have been made, the links: prostitution-migration, poor countri- rich countries, demand for sex from men in rich countries met by women from poor countries, still exist in all their starkness despite all counter-measures. These measures include, among others, information and prevention campaigns, enhanced co-operation between the various national and international police forces to combat the criminal organi- tions and the promulgation and implementation of new legislative pro- sions. Any analysis of the phenomenon shows with increasing clarity that even if the terms “clandestine immigration” and “trafficking in human beings” define in principle two different activities, each of them cons- tently becomes closely intertwined with the other. They are both, in fact, segments of a new immense area of criminal activity, generated by the migrants’ aspirations for a better life for themselves and their families, on one hand, and the obstacles which the immigration authorities put in the way of their realization, on the other.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

In its blatant forms of sexual exploitation of women and children and the international slave labor market, human trafficking is a human rights crisis worldwide. Despite the efforts of governments, global law enforcement, and the UN, the phenomenon continues to grow at a staggering rate. The contributors to Measuring Human Trafficking pinpoint key reasons for the lag—from inconsistent empirical data to distracting immigration debates—while analyzing areas for improvement in assessing and monitoring these complex criminal activities, in terms of both their practical aspects and the human results.
  • Trafficking in the world context: A crime against humanity
  • Toward clear common definitions of trafficking phenomena
  • Guidelines for improving research and data collection
  • An in-depth review of quantitative approaches to estimating trafficking throughout the EU countries
  • An extended case study illustrating common dilemmas in qualitative research on trafficking
  • How trafficking works: a criminal-network perspective
Measuring Human Trafficking needs to be read by scholars, professionals, and policymakers in the criminology and human rights fields. The ideas in this important volume can serve to improve the global knowledge base, strengthen coordination between agencies, and develop more effective solutions for combating this most pressing moral issue.
