Known as 'the great northern diver' to his crewmates, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) fell into the Arctic Ocean on three occasions during his voyage as doctor on a whaler, before becoming part of the harpooning crew. This adventure sets the scene for the remarkable variety of his later life. This autobiography describes the varied aspects of his professional life as a doctor, sportsman, adventurer, political campaigner and author. It recounts the many true adventures that befell him and his relationship with such figures as Oscar Wilde, Kipling and Arthur Balfour.

Douglas Kerr is Honorary Research Fellow at Birkbeck College, University of London, and former Professor of English and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong. He is the author of Conan Doyle: Writing, Profession, and Practice (Oxford UP, 2013), Eastern Figures: Orient and Empire in British Writing (Hong Kong UP, 2008), George Orwell (Writers and their Work series, 2003), and Wilfred Owen's Voices: Language and Community (Oxford UP, 1993).
