Meningiomas: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcome

Editat de Joung H. Lee
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 15 noi 2009
The overall incidence of meningiomas, particularly in the developed countries, is rising due to a growing size of the aging population, with people living longer and enjoying healthier lives than ever before. Additionally, an increased utilization of imaging studies such as computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) for routine evaluation of closed head injuries, paranasal sinus problems and various non-specific neurological symptoms, ranging from headaches to dizziness, has contributed to enhanced detection of incidental meningiomas.
The book contains the most up-to-date information in all matters related to meningiomas, and is written by multiple contributors - internationally recognized experts in their respective fields from Asia, USA and Europe.
This is an essential reference guide to neurosurgeons and neurologists (in training and in practice), as well as medical libraries, throughout the world.

Descriere

Joung H. Lee has assembled a masterful volume on the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of meningiomas. It is complete in that it covers all aspects of this tumor; every location is discussed by acknowledged experts and every technique is described in detail. Basic biology forms an important and up-to-date part of the text. This book will serve as a reference for many years; in particular, Dr. Lee feels surgeons and future patients will benefit. There is little question that these aims will be fulfilled in this important tour de force. John A. Jane, Sr. , MD, PhD Charlottesville, VA, USA vii Preface In planning this book, I had three major goals. The first was to compile and disseminate all the advances and new information relating to meningiomas which became available in the last 15-20 years. In this time frame, there has been a significant increase in our understanding in regards to the meningioma pathologic classification, the natural history and basic science. Dramatic technological advancements have also been made in diagnostic and interventional radiology as well as in surgical and radiation treatments for meningiomas, such as incorporation of the following in the treatment armamentaria: endoscopy, various skull base techniques, computer-assisted surgery and radiosurgery. Additionally, new information regarding surgical outcome and patient selection for surgery are becoming available, all of which are resulting in a significant change in how neurosurgeons treat patients with meningiomas. The second goal for this book was to teach and stimulate the next generation of neurosurgeons.

Recenzii

From the reviews:
"The purpose of this book is to teach young neurosurgeons how to recognize, investigate, and operate upon meningiomas in diverse locations. Neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuro-interventionalists, and radiologists are the main audience for this book. … This is an excellent book for neurosurgeons, ENT surgeons, oncologists, neuro-oncologists, radiologists, and neurologists." (Celso Agner, Doody’s Review Services, January, 2009)

Textul de pe ultima copertă

Meningiomas contains the most up-to-date information currently available on this increasingly common type of brain tumour, with contributions from internationally recognized experts in their respective fields working towards the uniform vision of one world-renowned editor.
As the reported incidences of meningiomas found among otherwise healthy patients has increased over the last few years, so too has our understanding of them, aided in particular by advances in imaging studies such as computer tomography and magnetic resonance testing. As a result, meningiomas as a disease entity, is continuing to rise in clinical importance throughout neurology, neurosurgery and primary care, particularly in geriatrics. Moreover, its socio-economic impact on society will further increase over the next few decades, as the aging population also increases, with people living longer and enjoying healthier lives than ever before.
Publication of a fully comprehensive and updated textbook on this important subject of meningiomas is therefore critically needed now to incorporate all of the aforementioned advancements. Meningiomas is an authoritative title, summarising the entirety of the topic, aimed at neurosurgeons, neurologists and general medical libraries throughout the world.
