Missa Sanctae Margaretae: New Horizons

Compozitor Gabriel Jackson
en Limba Engleză Sheet music – 19 mai 2011
for SATB and organThe Missa Sanctae Margaretae is a stunning new setting of the Missa Brevis, showcasing Jackson's mesmerizing choral writing. Scored for SATB and organ, the accessible choral lines move through a variety of textures and harmonies, with linear passages in the Kyrie and Agnus Dei and rich, chordal writing in the Gloria. The idiomatic organ accompaniment brings additional flavour to the music, sometimes answering the choral lines, sometimes offsetting them with fast, rhythmic passages. Ideal for use in services and concerts.

Recenzii

Gabriel Jackson's St Margaret Mass makes its point economically and fluently. Missa Sanctae Margaretae is a gift for Sunday mornings, lasting twelve minutes in toto, yet never sounding lightweight or perfunctory. No idea outstays its welcome, and the blissfully short Sanctus (including Benedictus) is a masterpiece of effective brevity.
Gabriel Jackson's Missa Sanctae Margaretae is aimed at competent parish choirs and really hits the spot. By writing choral parts that often have elements in common, Jackson provides less musical material to learn than may be apparent to the listener. Singers will also enjoy the lyrical lines, supple rhythms and radiant harmonies. The organ part (which requires a fairly proficient player) cleverly supports and complements the vocal lines while establishing structure and order. The variety and contrast between celebration and meditation should appeal to choirs and congregations alike.
Admirers of Jackson's warm, added-note harmonies and rhythmically supple vocal lines will find much to enjoy. Scored for SATB voices and organ, it falls well within the compass of many parish and college choirs.
Jackson adopts a simpler compositional style in Missa Sanctae Margaretae, with easier melodic and harmonic writing. This is liturgical music, written for use by any choir of modest ability. It still manages to articulate realize the pleas for mercy in the Kyrie and Agnus Dei, the joyful affirmations of the Gloria, as well as the mystical implications of the Sanctus. The writing is never less interesting for the adoption of this simpler style.
