Recenzii

Three Motets takes three well-known motet texts and sets them in Skempton's characteristic choral idiom - syllabic, entirely homophonic, sensitive to the meter of text, warm harmonies - and produces a series of subtle, rather inward settings for SATB voices that wander gently but purposefully through a gamut of keys to some surprising destinations.
The three new motets from Howard Skempton typify his style with their understated hypnotic minimalism and incandescent architecture of the harmony. These are useful settings of familiar Latin texts. Locus iste is bold yet reverent, Beati quorum via has the flowing ease of Stanford's famous setting (and is no more difficult), and Ave Virgo Sanctissima is simple and sublime.
Locus iste is a lovely setting of the famous text, and worth a look at. Any choir that can manage the deceptively difficult Bruckner setting should cope easily with this. The range is kind to the voices . . . Beati splits into more than the four parts of Locus iste. Again the setting is simple, mainly relying on one chordal progression in the middle section . . . Ave virgo is again in four parts, simple and effective. The edition is excellent.
