Missing Banners

Indiana University basketball fans love their five national championship banners that hang so proudly at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana. They wish there were more. There should have been. "Missing Banners" takes a look back at five seasons where Indiana could have won national titles but came up just a little short for one reason or another.

"Missing Banners" is written by award-winning sports writers Tom Brew and Terry Hutchens. The pair went back and interviewed dozens of former players, coaches and school administrators, plus opposing players and coaches and media members to help you relive five fabulous seasons of Indiana basketball.

The years covered in great detail are 1975, 1980, 1993, 2002 and 2013, all season where Indiana was either ranked No. 1 in the country at some point in the season or played in the national championship game (2002). The book is loaded with never-before-told stories from days gone by and is filled with honest and often heartbreaking rememberances from past IU players and coaches.

It's a must-read for Indiana basketball fans of every age, especially since is spans five decades and some of Indiana's greatest players and teams.

The book is also filled with more than 60 pictures from days gone by, courtesy of the Archives Department at the Indiana University library in Bloomington, Ind.

Tom Brew has been an award-winning sports writer and newspaper editor for more than three decades. He is an Indiana University graduate who was born and raised in Schererville, Indiana. He has worked at the St. Petersburg (Tampa Bay) Times, the Tampa Tribune, Indianapolis Star and South Florida Sun-Sentinel and has covered Indiana basketball and national college basketball as a writer and editor for many years. This is Tom's second book. His first book, a novel called "The Ties That Bind," was released in 2014 to critical acclaim and deals with the perils of gambling addiction among college athletes and best friends. Tom also published a collection of stories in 2012 called "A Season Inside: Lake Central Basketball,'' which covered the final high school season of current NBA player Glenn Robinson III and his Lake Central High School teammates in St. John, Indiana. Tom has three grown children and two granddaughters. He still writes and edits on college sports and also owns a book publishing company.
