Mononuclear Phagocytes: Biology of Monocytes and Macrophages
Editat de R. van Furthen Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 oct 1992
During the last twenty-five years research on the biology of mononuclear phagocytes has increased tremendously. This motivated Professor R. van Furth to organize five international conferences on this subject in Leiden, the Netherlands. The edited proceedings of these meethings were published: in 1970 Mononuclear Phagocytes; in 1975 Mononuclear Phagocytes in Immunity, Infections and Pathology; in 1980 Mononuclear Phagocytes -- Functional Aspects; and in 1985 Mononuclear Phagocytes -- Characteristics, Physiology and Function. Reviews of these volumes, published in international journals, praised them as the most up-to-date state of the art publications. The publication of 1991 includes 88 chapters written by more than 200 authors.

Recenzii
`This book comprises the proceedings of the fourth Leiden conference... Anybody with more than a passing interest in mononuclear phagocyte cells will want to have these proceedings available for consultation. ...this is a book that should be available in every pathology department where there is an interest in these cells.'
The Journal of Clinical Pathology (July 1986)
`These two large volumes contain the proceedings of the Third Conference on Mononuclear Phagocytes held in Leiden in September 1978. They contain a wealth of material which will be of value to those working with monocytes. These books contain papers on the structure, cytochemistry, origin and maturation, function and plasma membranes of the monocyte, their antimicrobial role, and role in the immune response. It should prove valuable as a source of reference and information in this important developing field.'
British Journal of Haematology, 47 (1981)
`...containing the meeting discussions as well as the reports, these proceedings surely embrace the 1978 'state of knowledge' with respect to the mononuclear phagocytic systems.'
Experimental Hematology, 9:1 (1981)
`The reticuloendothelial system died in Leiden in 1969 at the hands of Ralph van Furth and from iets ashes sprang the mononuclear phagocytes system. This massive two volume proceedings from the 3rd Leiden conference held in 1978 is a tribute to the vigour of this new phoenix and clearly documents its explosive growth. Nearly two thousand pages of erudite and informative papers and reviews describing the functional properties of macrophages are enclosed... The contents are entirely comprehensive covering a bewildering range of functional attributes of these remarkable cells. Until superseded by the proceedings of the fourth Leiden conference (and what a prospect that is!) these two volumes will undoubtedly become the definitive text for anyone interested in mononuclear phagocytes.'
Journal of Clinical Pathology (May 1981)
`For those interested in the occult mysteries and properties of one of the most fascinating but difficult cell series to trace in origin and function, this two-volume series on mononuclear phagocytes will prove exceptionally interesting. It is a relatively complete chronicle of the progress made over the past decade in elucidating the function and stem cell origin of renewing populations of mononuclear phagocytes and related cells. The two volumes will prove useful as references for both teaching and research.'
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 42 (1981)
`These two volumes constitute an important landmark in the study of 'inflammation'. ...well produced and should be of value, not only to cellular pathologists and scientists, but also to all of us concerned with human diseases.'
Journal of the European Society of Pathology (October 1980)
