Robert B. Charlick is associate professor of political science at Cleveland State University. While living in Niger, he participated in a number of international drought relief and development projects. He also has lived in Côte d'lvoire and France and has worked in most of the countries of west and central Africa.

Dr. Charlick sketches the emergence and history of Niger, showing how its component societies were influenced by changes in the physical environment, the introduction of beliefs such as Islam and nationalism, and patterns of world trade.
