Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Liquids: Theory, Experiments, and Applications, Second Edition

Autor Jozef Kowalewski, Lena Maler
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 19 dec 2017
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is widely used across many fields of science because of the rich data it produces, and some of the most valuable data come from studies of nuclear spin relaxation in solution. The first edition of this book, published more than a decade ago, provided an accessible and cohesive treatment of the field. The present second edition is a significant update, covering important new developments in recent years.
Collecting relaxation theory, experimental techniques, and illustrative applications into a single volume, this book clarifies the nature of the phenomenon, shows how to study it and explains why such studies are worthwhile. Coverage ranges from basic to rigorous theory and from simple to sophisticated experimental methods. Topics include cross-relaxation, multispin phenomena, relaxation studies of molecular dynamics and structure and special topics such as relaxation in systems with quadrupolar nuclei, in paramagnetic systems and in long-living spin states.
Avoiding overly demanding mathematics, the authors explain spin relaxation in a manner that anyone with a familiarity with NMR can follow. The focus is on illustrating and explaining the physical nature of relaxation phenomena. Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Liquids: Theory, Experiments and Applications, 2nd edition, provides useful supplementary reading for graduate students and is a valuable reference for NMR spectroscopists, whether in chemistry, physics or biochemistry.

Recenzii

"This book by Kowalewski and Maeler provides an outstanding overview of nuclear spin relaxation. The authors successfully guide the reader towards a clear understanding of the underlying physics, which is described using an accessible formalism, and at the same time providing a rigorous treatment. The reader is gradually introduced to the more complex theories, to the understanding of standard and advanced NMR experiments, and is updated on the very recent applications. This book is highly recommended as a reference book and a textbook to learn both the fundamentals and the more advanced aspects of the field."
—Claudio Luchinat, CERM, University of Florence
Praise for the first edition:
"…Three areas of theory, experiment, and applications are addressed in this monograph. …The applications throughout the book are often chosen from biochemistry, although there are examples of relaxation in 'small' organic molecules. … I found the book very readable. I am quite sure that NMR spectroscopists and chemists … will find it a particularly handy reference … ."
Journal of the American Chemical Society, Vol. 128, No. 32, 2006

Descriere

Updated and expanded, this second edition of Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Liquids explores the nature of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), shows how to study it, and explains why such studies are worthwhile. It is suitable as supplementary reading for graduate students, and will be a valuable reference for NMR spectroscopists in a variety of fields.
