Orestes: Clarendon Paperbacks

Autor Euripides Editat de Charles W. Willink
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 3 aug 1989
Despite the outstanding popularity of this play in antiquity and its importance as a link between classical Greek tragedy and later theatrical developments, this new edition (first published in hardback in 1986) is the first in English since 1895. The introduction attempts to reinstate the plot of the drama as its central feature, to which the treatment of character, themes, and formal elements is subsidiary. The play as a whole is a tour de force of dramatic and 'mythopoetic' ingenuity. The text reproduced is that of Murray, but many changes are discussed and some new conjectures offered in the commentary, a special feature of which is the detailed attention to the lyric metres.

Recenzii

'Willink's splendid edition [is] a culmination of the labours of a lifetime ... its chief contribution is the commentary, which pursues or rather attacks problems of text, metre and grammar in the accustomed fashion ... and is also alert to the play's rhetoric and dramaturgy.' Times Educational Supplement
'Willink's commentary - the first in English since Wedd's in 1895 - deserves a warm welcome and not least for its consistent combination of precise scholarship with readiness to confront broad questions about Greek tragedy ... it will be the standard commentary for many years.' JACT Review
