It is divided into six main sections; the first two analyze general aspects, while the following three focus on malformations of the thorax, airways, esophagus and diaphragm. The final section describes the main pediatric tumors involving the chest and internal thoracic organs. Each chapter starts with a classification of the main pathologies related to the anatomical region considered. For each pathology, the various aspects of the diagnostic-therapeutic procedure are described in details - from the clinical presentation and diagnosis to the pre-operative preparation, the surgical aspects, and the post-operative course. Possible future developments are also evaluated.

Notă biografică
Girolamo Mattioli is Director of the Pediatric Surgery School at the University of Genoa, and Head of the Pediatric Surgery Unit at the Giannina Gaslini Institute of Genoa, an internationally renowned children's hospital. He has performed over 5000 surgical procedures in children, 3000 of them using minimally invasive approaches. He is the author of more than 300 publications and a member of the principal pediatric surgical societies (EUPSA, IPEG, SICP). He is also a reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Journal of Urology, and Journal of Laparoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques. Professor Mattioli’s research fields cover all aspects of pediatric minimally invasive surgery.
Paolo Petralia graduated in Medicine and Surgery and subsequently specialized in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine with a particular focus on hospital organization. He worked in the health management and in the rehabilitation and outpatient facilities environments. He was appointed Managing Directorof the Giannina Gaslini Children’s Hospital in July 2010 and in 2011 was elected President of the Italian children's hospitals. He has simultaneously directed many non-profit organizations and has extensive experience as a coordinator and national and regional representative. He has been a member of the board of directors of several organizations, including the Galliera Hospital in Genoa. He is also a journalist and Adjunct Professor of Health Organization for two degree courses and one school of specialization at the Faculty of Medicine, Genoa University.Michele Torre is one of the most experienced pediatric surgeons at the Giannina Gaslini Children’s Hospital.
