When he returns, covered in mud from playing in the pond, his mother tells him to hurry and clean up for his birthday celebrations. It is full of colorful illustrations with an easy to follow plot leading up to the very special event, the surprise party, and the even bigger surprise at the end, the gift that Peter really wanted for his birthday. And, it's something that he's more than willing to share with all of his friends at the party - a good little note about sharing that always needs reinforcing with young people.
