Reflections from Canoe Country: Paddling the Waters of the Adirondacks and Canada: New York State Series

Autor Christopher Angus Paul Jamieson Ilustrat de Anna Gerhard Arnold
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 28 feb 1997
Delightful, full of wisdom and humor and passion for wild places. Angus shows us the outdoors in all its moods, from swollen brooks in springtime to whitecapped autumn lakes, from the meandering Oswegatchie River of the Adirondacks to the dark tarns of Nova Scotia. With him we canoe, kayak, and ski through the seasons, always mindful that the landscape we love will remain unspoiled only as long as we're willing to fight for them. -- Christine Jerome, author of An Adirondack Passage Reflections from Canoe Country had a peculiar genesis. When Christopher Angus and two of his friends were canoeing a stretch of the Grass River in the Adirondacks in 1986, they were cited by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for trespassing on the timberlands of the Champion Paper Company. Amazed to find that the DEC's priorities protected corporate rather than environmental interests in a publicly owned state park, Angus joined lobbying efforts for the Environmental Protection Act as well as for Paul Jamieson's decades-long battle to reopen Adirondack waterways. The Adirondack Park extends across upstate New York and is considered part of the 26-million acre Northern Forest of New England which stretches to eastern Maine. This enormous expanse accommodates great forests, thousands of lakes, and vast river systems. The author's strong ties to Canada's maritime provinces and to the St. Lawrence River complete the book's implicit focus on the interconnectedness of our Northeastern wilderness. Much has been made of the need to preserve Alaska's wilderness. But it is here, in the most densely populated region of North America, that we will finally learn whether or not man can coexist withthe natural world. Angus writes of this world with the eye of a poet and the discerning ear of a political commentator. The reader is treated to haunting descriptions of wildlife as well as to a keen analysis of the economic benefits resulting from policies promoting environmental protection.
