Belle Beach was a noted equestrienne, born into a prominent New England family who summered in Newport, RI, at their cottage, Heartsease. Beach won numerous horse show ribbons, was well known as a teacher of riding and driving to women and children, and was revered by horse people of her time. In 1912, she was referred to as ""the greatest female rider of all time.""
