Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals: Macmillan Science

Autor Jonathan Balcombe
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 10 mar 2010
Jonathan Balcombe's follow-up to his successful first book, Pleasurable Kingdom, is an eloquent and scientifically informed account, which shatters the myth that animals eat and reproduce mindlessly and shows how we humans have to learn to treat them as sentient beings capable of feelings and pain and emotions.

Caracteristici

Balcombe's first book garnered praise from many respected scientists and animal activists: 'Draws together an extraordinary amount of information' said Peter Singer; Jane Goodall described it as 'fascinating and often moving'; and Marc Beckoff called it 'superb'
Pleasurable Kingdom had a first serial in The Independent. It took issue with the basic tenet of evolutionary theory: that our behaviour is naturally adapted to survival pressures. Instead Balcombe argued that animals indulge in many acts that are not geared toward procreation and whose only motivator is pleasure. The new book will harness the latest scientific evidence to showcase the full range of animals' emotions (whereas the first book just focused on pleasure)
Today, science is uncovering stunning new information on animals' experiences - including aspects of their awareness, emotionality, perceptiveness, sociability and virtue that were undreamed of a generation ago. This book showcases these discoveries, and argues for a dramatic overhaul in our relationship with sentient animal life
Balcombe combines rigorous science with entertaining anecdotes to reach a wide readership
Nobel Laureate J.M. Coetzee has agreed to write a foreword for the book. He is the author of Waiting for the Barbarians, The Life& Times of Michael K and Disgrace, among others. He was the first author to win the Booker Prize twice and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003
