Social Capital, Resilience and Adaptation on Small Islands: Climate Change on the Isles of Scilly: Climate Change Management
Autor Jan Petzolden Limba Engleză Hardback – apr 2017
The findings have relevance for the further refinement of social capital theory and social emergence. Combined with the perspective of resilience, this approach is also relevant from a policy standpoint, given that small islands have been identified as hotspots not only due to their vulnerability, but also because they serve as examples for media and politics to advance the agenda of environmental protection. >

Notă biografică
Jan Petzold is a geographer trained at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and specialised on human-nature interactions in coastal zones and small islands. In his PhD research he analysed the potential and limitations of social capital for adaptability to climate change on the Isles of Scilly, UK. Besides his research in the United Kingdom and on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), such as the Bahamas, his regional interest is East Africa. Since December 2016 he works as Science Officer for the Technical Support Unit of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Textul de pe ultima copertă
The book deals with the role of social capital regarding its potential to increase small islands’ adaptive capacity to climate change. The case study of the Isles of Scilly, UK, shows how social structures can play a very important role for climate change adaptation. It is argued that social features have to be understood in a non-deterministic and potentially ambivalent manner, according to their place-specific geographical, cultural and historical context. Only then, risk management and adaptation strategies can succeed and function in a sustainable way.

Caracteristici
Original island/archipelago case study from the global north, which complements the present focus on tropical atoll islands Empirical case study research with a mixed methods quantitative/qualitative approach, including numerous illustrations, gives the reader a profound insight into small island life A critical theoretical discussion section contributes to the framing and further development of theory on social capital, resilience, emergence, and islandness Includes supplementary material: sn.pub/extras
