Recenzii

Thomas (Health Planning Associates, Memphis) begins with chapters on basic definitions and concepts in a book that is one of the first to map out the contribution of medical sociology; social correlates of health and sickness; social stratification and deviance concepts applicable to health status and behavior, including the roles of sex, race, and age; the sociology of mental illness; and the sociological perspective on social change and technology. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the conepts and then proceeds to specific applications. Within each chapter are boxed text with clarifying material, suggested readings, and a listing of useful Web sites. The applicability of sociological research, concepts, and ideas has been shown to be an important adjunct to increasing an understanding of health and illness behavior. The way the text moves from abstract concepts to concrete practice enhances the utility and expediency of this work. Written in a clear and plain style, the book contains a topical index and glossary. It will be a practical reference text for students, sociologists, and health care professionals. Summing up: Recommended. Undergraduates through faculty.
