Autor D. H. Lawrence
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 26 sep 2012
The Penguin English Library Edition ofSons and Loversby D. H. Lawrence

'"She was a brazen hussy."
"She wasn't. - And shewaspretty, wasn't she?"
"I didn't look ... And tell your girls, my son, that when they're running after you, they're not to come and ask your mother for you - tell them that - brazen baggages you meet at dancing classes"'

The marriage of Gertrude and Walter Morel has become a battleground. Repelled by her uneducated and sometimes violent husband, delicate Gertrude devotes her life to her children, especially to her sons, William and Paul - determined they will not follow their father into working down the coal mines. But conflict is evitable when Paul seeks to escape his mother's suffocating grasp through relationships with women his own age. Set in Lawrence's native Nottinghamshire,Sons and Loversis a highly autobiographical and compelling portrayal of childhood, adolescence and the clash of generations.

The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

Notă biografică

D. H. Lawrence was born in 1885 into a poor working-class family in a coal mining village in Nottinghamshire. The fourth child of a schoolmistress and little-educated miner, his working class upbringing, fraught relationship with his father and very close bond with his mother informed the semi-autobiographicalSons and Lovers. Lawrence started his career teaching, and it was Ford Madox Ford who first noticed Lawrence's talent when he saw some of his poetry in 1908. He went on to become a prolific novelist, playwright, essayist and literary critic as well as poet, and spent the majority of his life travelling in a sort of self-imposed exile, through places as diverse as Australia, Italy, New Mexico, Bavaria and Sri Lanka. He died in 1930 in Vence, France, of tuberculosis.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

Lawrence's first major novel was also the first in the English language to explore ordinary working-class life from the inside. No writer before or since has written so well about the intimacies enforced by a tightly knit mining community and by a family where feelings are never hidden for long. When the marriage between Walter Morel and his sensitive, high-minded wife begins to break down, the bitterness of their frustration seeps into their children's lives. Their second son, Paul, craves the warmth of family and community, but knows that he must sacrifice everything in the struggle for independence if he is not to repeat his parents' failure. Lawrence's powerful description of Paul's single-minded efforts to define himself sexually and emotionally through relationships with two women - the innocent, old-fashioned Miriam Leivers and the experienced, provocatively modern Clara Dawes - makes this a novel as much for the beginning of the twenty-first century as it was for the beginning of the twentieth.

New edition of a timeless classic about inner conflicts and social criticism, now part of Alma's successful Evergreens series

Recenzii

"He's an intoxicator, a very great writer, punished by the feminists and their ludicrous opinions. The short stories are among the best in the language. I re-read Sons and Lovers and The Rainbow recently and thought them wonderful... Has there ever been anyone like him for bringing places and people so vividly to life?" -- Doris Lessing "Lawrence's masterly portraiture of the human impulse in his fiction had strength and depth...He tore at the rock of life with hand and implement... in Sons and Lovers he fashioned the hard substance of his place and people in memorable ways." Guardian, March 1930 "An affecting portrait of a mining family torn apart by class divisions and individual desire at the turn of the century" Guardian "His fierce love for his mother warring with the need to follow his own desires - analysed with a vigorous relentlessness and pungent imagery - makes this a work whose power stands the test of time" Sunday Times "When I was 13 or 14 this was the book I couldn't put down. It's very good teenager territory" -- Jonathan Pryce Daily Express
