This book highlights a number of social sustainability issues at different stages of the supply chain, and demonstrates how these issues can be addressed by adopting social sustainability practices in the manufacturing supply chain. 

In the wake of emerging social issues in developing countries, research on social sustainability has gained importance for academics and practitioners alike. The three distinguishable social sustainability dimensions in manufacturing that emerge as a result of this research provide insights for supply chain managers and practitioners who might otherwise be unaware of what constitutes social sustainability. A better understanding allows supply chain managers to address these issues more appropriately to increase their supply chain competitiveness in the market.  

The book presents a social sustainability scale that can be used by practitioners to measure supply chain social sustainabilityto benchmark their supply chains globally. The research also helps academicians to gain an understanding of the social issues related to the manufacturing supply chain, while the social measures developed serve as reference material for policy-makers and sustainability experts in emerging economies.

Notă biografică

Dr. Mani Venkatesh currently serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Montpellier Business School (MBS), France. He earned his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee and later he was awarded one of the prestigious Erasmus (European Union) fellowships to pursue his Post-doctoral research in the Faculty of Economics (FEP), University of Porto, Portugal. Prior to academic assignment, he has served in the industry for over a decade in fortune 500 companies in various capacities. His research interest includes supply chain management, supply chain social sustainability, green consumerism, and strategy. He has contributed many research articles in referred journals by leading publishers that include Elsevier, Emerald, Springer, MDPI, Inderscience, and Indian Management (AIMA). He has also contributed book chapters published by leading publishers (Springer, IGI Global). Some of his research articles have appeared in International Journal of Production Economics (IJPE), Resources Conservation and Recycling, Ecological Indicators and Management Research Review. His research on supply chain social sustainability is highly regarded among leading scholars. He has been a regular reviewer of over 12 prestigious journals in the area of supply chain management. He also presented research articles in International conferences organized by Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR) in association with Society of Operations Management (SOM), and Glogift society in association with Curtin University (Glowgift 2014-Singapore).

Dr. Catarina Delgado currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Economics and a researcher at LIAAD-INESCTEC, the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support, University of Porto. She started her academic career as Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics, University of Porto in 1996. She is alsoa Director and founding member of EDGE (FEP, UP) and Member of ISR-Porto (FEUP, UP) 2007. She teaches supply chain management, logistics management and operation management courses for master of management students. She also taught at Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto – Licenciatura in Journalism and Communication Sciences (2005–2008) and EGP-UPBS – Escola de Gestão do Porto. She earned her PhD from University of Porto and MBA from University of Coimbra, Portugal. Her research interest includes operation management and sustainability disclosures. Her research has appeared in leading peer journals of repute. In addition to teaching, she also supervises PhD students. She won many awards including Award of the Eng. António de Almeida Foundation 1995/96, and Award of “Eng. Cristiano P. Spratley 1995/96” for her intellectual contributions.
