The Arians of the Fourth Century

Autor John Henry Newman
en Paperback – 24 mar 2010
This book contains John Henry Newman's 1890 treatise, "The Arians of The Fourth Century". It is a monograph on the modes of intellectual history within the Christian church, that constituted a ground-breaking divergence from the ideas of previous Anglican scholars when first published. This fascinating text is highly recommended for those with an interest in the development of doctrine within the Christian church, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of related literature. Contents include: "The Church of Antioch", "Historical Connexion of Arianism with the Antiochene School", "Judaism of Antioch", "Revival of the Fortunes of the Jews", "Their Influence upon the Populace and the Schools of Syria", "Quarto-Decimans", "Of the Proconsulate", "Of Syria", "Mosaic Rites", etcetera. John Henry Newman (1801 - 1890) was an influential figure in the religious history of nineteenth-century England. Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Notă biografică

John Henry Newman (21 February 1801 - 11 August 1890) was an English theologian and poet. His major writings include the Tracts for the Times, his autobiography Apologia Pro Vita Sua, the Grammar of Assent, and the poem "The Dream of Gerontius." He also wrote the popular hymns "Lead, Kindly Light," "Firmly I believe, and truly," and "Praise to the Holiest in the Height."Newman was a controversial figure in the religious history of England, being one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement, an influential and controversial group of Anglicans who wanted the Church of England to bring back many beliefs and rituals from before the English Reformation. The movement was somewhat successful and in 1845 Newman, joined by some of his followers, left his position as the vicar at St. Mary's, Oxford, and was received by the Catholic Church. In 1879, he was created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in recognition of his services to the cause of the Catholic Church in England and was canonised as a saint in 2019.
